Geeks on the Grass

Friends, developers, geeks! Lend me your picnic blankets!

We believe that not all events require alcohol, extensive agendas and your entire weekend.

We believe lunch should be more interesting than a quick dash to the food court.

To this end, we present Geeks on the Grass: a chance to gather in the park with like-minded people, throw down the picnic blanket and chill out.

Working at the Australian Museum, I sometimes head off to the Hyde Park for quick stroll to clear my mind for the major project(s) that I'm currently involved in. It helps quite a lot. Sometimes even lunches at Hyde Park are awesome; under the shade of some awesome trees, under the sun that Sydney is blessed with, right in the CBD.

At a fairly recent event, yet another one at a local pub in Sydney, Ben and I were chatting about work/life, but mostly work as geeks normally do and the both of us just came to up with this crazy idea. If memory serves right, this idea came about when Ben mentioned that he was moving closer to Hyde Park for work and that was it. I couldn't help but invite one of the awesome geeks I know to share ideas over lunch and from that was born Code Picnic.

Pitching the ideas to other fellow geeks, the awesome Lisa came with a much better name: Geeks on the Grass.

The first Sydney Geeks on the Grass has been set for Friday 21st September 2007 at Hyde Park, Sydney. So fellow geeks and heck, anybody, why don't you tag along and bring somebody along too. News Digital Media has kindly sponsored the first event, so we'll provide some nibbles and drinks. More details and exact location to meet will soon be posted on GeekWhisperer, so subscribe to the feed and feel free to comment.

Read more about it at Ben's blog.
